Founding Background
The establishment of TCC was guided by prayerful discernment and several contextual necessities.
Three major factors shaped its founding:
- Urban Expansion and Christian Growth:
During Myanmar’s economic liberalization in the 1990s, Yangon experienced rapid urbanization.
With many migrating from rural areas, urban congregations grew, creating a demand for trained
pastors, evangelists, and lay leaders capable of ministering effectively in diverse settings. - Migration and the Chin Christian Presence:
A large number of Zomi/Chin migrants settled in Yangon. Churches rooted in Chin dialects were formed,
including the Tedim Baptist Church–Yangon (TBC–Y) in 1997. As these churches expanded, the need for
theologically trained leaders became a pressing challenge. - Transition at Myanmar Institute of Theology (MIT):
Around the same time, MIT refocused its academic programs on graduate studies, phasing out its
Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) program in 1999. This shift left migrant churches without access to
English-medium B.Th. training.
Recognizing the need, TBC–Y launched an English-medium B.Th. program accessible to all ethnic groups,
envisioning a new generation of Christ-centered servant leaders.

Partnership With MIT
TBC–Y formed a strategic partnership with the Myanmar Institute of Theology (MIT), adopting MIT’s B.Th.
curriculum while assuming full financial responsibility for the new institution. MIT provided academic
supervision to ensure high academic standards.
In 2000, Tedim Christian College officially became a Bachelor of Theology Extension Program of MIT,
committed to academic excellence and contextual ministry.
